January's trip - Oak Ridge, TN

My challenge to myself this year is to visit at least one small town in Tennessee each month. I was trying for Sweetwater this month, but the snow came and we stayed home. So on Saturday, the 20th, we headed for Oak Ridge. We wandered around Jackson Square. Found a great boutique and another store we liked. Then we headed over to the quilt shop Atomic Fibers. Mike Flynn, the sales rep, for QT fabrics was doing a presentation. His company was the first in America. They had a big factory but now the fabric is printed overseas. It was in South Korea but they are changing to China. It was fascinating to hear about the process. Then we were allowed to buy short bolts of fabric. I wasn't going to buy any, but ended up with three. Just can't resist fabric. Then it was time to eat. Big Ed's Pizza is an institution in Oak Ridge. Back in the day, Big Ed himself, would bring us pizza to eat when there were ball games we were working. Once he died, his sons took over the business. Big Ed started the business in February 1970. His wife, Ginger, helped found the quilting guild I belong to. So I had never eaten in the actual Big Ed's or had a hot pizza. It was always cold by the time it got to us at work. So we decided to eat there. It was a unique spot. Packed even on a Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. The pizza was delicious, however. I can understand why everyone raves about it. Yummy!
